All of the kids have been very busy helping Teacher Kristen in the garden! Each spring, Discovery Zone has the opportunity to tend a plot in the Hope on the Hill Community Garden. The food grown in the garden is donated to the Hope on the Hill food pantry to help feed families in need of assistance.
The children have helped turn over the soil, pull out weeds, and set up poles for our beans to climb up as they grow. Now we get to begin planting our seed starts!
The children have the opportunity to use the same real gardening tools that adults use in the community garden. Encouraging children to use authentic items in their work empowers them and sends the message that their activities are important and valuable. It is also an opportunity to practice treating tools with care.
