My Role at Discovery Zone
I am the K19 teacher and have been working at Discovery Zone since June 2017.
My Background & Family
Hello! My name is Heather Nelson. I have been spending summers with the DZ school age kids since June 2017. However, beginning in September 2018 I will be teaching, and learning from, the pre-kindergarteners! When I was in middle school, a guest pastor spoke about their missions to African orphanages. Through that message my heart recognized my calling to work with children. I originally thought that calling would be in the form of being a pediatric nurse. However, after the third or fourth time I passed out in a medical class, it became very clear that I would be taking a different route! It turned out that teaching was a much more natural fit, and I graduated spring 2018 with a bachelor's of arts degree in Elementary Education. I am looking forward to continuing to grow as both an educator and a learner here at Discovery Zone. Along with loving and learning from preschool and elementary age children, I am also a youth group leader for students in middle and high school at my home church.
Why I Work With Kids
My favorite part about teaching is fostering community and relationships. I love building bonds with the students and modeling healthy social interactions within a community. Then I have the joy of watching the kids practice those interpersonal skills by navigating their friendships with each other and their relationship with me.
My Favorite Bible Verse
“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14
A Few of My Favorite Things
Chocolate, sunflowers, being creative, reading, collecting coffee mugs, and white mocha with hazelnut coffee!
